Turning three

Turning three

Turning three is no laughing matter and let me tell you why.

Starting around the third birthday, kids are able to retrieve the fragment memories from their childhood. They probably won’t remember the whole event or context, but remembering even the slightest happy memory is worth the effort. When I was a kid (we are talking early 80’s), my parents took my sister and me on a trip to a little toy shop in Austria. Back then, going to another country, solely for the purpose of finding one small toy, was a really huge deal. My early memory subconsciously started the never-ending passion for collecting toys. So, buy that perfect present, make a delicious cake and celebrate.

Turning three also means kids no longer fit into the baby (0-3 year) toy category. Their attention spans are longer and imaginative play should be an important part of your daily routine.

When it comes to kids’ toys, wooden toys are, and always will be, on top of my shopping list. I always try to choose toys which can transform, so that my kids don’t get bored after one play. I also love toys that are creative and well-made. Since design is an important part of my life I try to choose toys which are functional and visually appealing at the same time. I’m not going to lie, I’m the biggest kid there is, so I do choose toys that both kids and me will love.

That is why I was elated when I stumbled upon  ESNAF wooden toys by Archabits, a small architecture studio from Bulgaria. Their toys ended up being a perfect birthday present for my three year old.

They are simple in their design, yet depict each animal perfectly. I really love their clean, minimal lines and architectural aesthetic. They look great scattered on a messy room’s floor or as a part of your perfect shelfie. It is a timeless toy and I would dare to say, a future classic. But most importantly, my kids approved them. And so do I.

Each animal consists of several pieces, which are carefully handmade out of the natural materials, such as beech or oak wood. There is no paint or varnish on them, so they are perfectly safe for the kids. But, there is one clever little detail that captured my attention in a second. Small, circular and pretty strong magnets are embedded in each piece of the animal and hold the animal assembled. You can match each part of the animal according to the colour of the magnet. Or, if you fancy, you can mix-and-match many different parts to create a completely new animal. They even matched the tissue paper of their packaging to the colour of the magnets, how well-thought-out is that? Small details really do make all the difference.

You can play with them in many ways, which is why I think this is a clever toy. We love to imagine stories around the animals. Sometimes I throw in a useful information about each animal. Or we just count the parts. Sometimes we make weird animals. It truly works wonders for both my and my kids’ imagination. It works equally well with my 5 year old son, my 3 year old daughter, as well as a 35 year old me. That way we can learn and bond through play and storytelling, two things children thrive on.

There is only one itsy-bitsy problem. It is pretty difficult to choose one favourite animal from Archabits amazing range of design objects. Thankfully, you can also buy them as a set and then buy additional individual animals to complete your collection. And that is exactly what I’ll do.
